Autumn Leaves

Summer has come and gone. The autumn air is strong. Times have been reset, the nights are cooler, and the night comes a lot quicker than I anticipated. Well, it's safe to say one of my favorite seasons has finally arrived (minus the fact that it's still quite warm in the daytime, but who's upset?). It's finally time to cool off and cool down from the exhausting heat of the summer.

But, truthfully, the transition can be quite shocking to our systems. If your environment is anything like the one I live in, the cold comes quick, leaving me little to no time to prepare for the cooler and drier weather.

The key parts of autumn to take into consideration, is that it is vata time of the year. Dry, cool, rough, light are all qualities that are naturally going to be higher. Remember, that which is going on outside our bodies, is going to happen inside our bodies. We have to combat this by taking in the opposite qualities and increasing how these manifest within us! We want to favor oily, smooth, warm, and heavy in our lives. How do we become more grounded? How do we stay warm? These are questions that you should be asking.

Try to incorporate some of these tips to help you transition more smoothly:
  1. Layer up! Who doesn't love cozy fall sweaters and scarves? Not only are they fashionable, but they help with the whole staying warm thing! It's always better to stay warm than cool in this season.
  2. Oils are your friends! Not your enemy! Use more oils and ghees in your cooking. This will help balance out the dry quality that may be increasing in your body. You can also do an oil massage daily to help with the potential drier skin you experience.
  3. You need to stay grounded. Think heaviness and grounding. Bundle yourself up in large and heavy blankets. Sleep is great during this time. Warm milk before bed. All of this will help with grounding.
  4. What to eat?! Warm and cooked foods is super key. No more salads and raw foods of the summer! Favor root veggies. Think about it, root veggies literally are grown in the ground...what better way to ground yourself?

With these tips, you'll be a-okay to take care of the fall and winter seasons!
