The Moon. The feminine energy. The nourisher. The soma. The nectar. The lustrous. The soft and gentle. The list goes on. The moon is the opposite force of the Sun in Ayurveda, and is the counter balance to the masculine force within our beings. Can you imagine Earth without the moon? There would be nothing to cool down the heat of the Sun. There would be no romantic-ness of an evening walk. What would become of the oceans? I begin to realize how much we take for granted the natural forces that influence our every day life, until we begin to picture our life without it. The Moon being one of those forces. In Ayurveda, the Moon governs the feminine energy and everything that goes along with that. Think love, compassion, tenderness, nourishing...the list goes on. It is the cooling energy in our systems, giving us the ability to slow down and savor the moments. It's the de-stresser and nurturer, reminding us of the beauty that is this universe. My teacher once told a story of the Moon that has stuck with me for a while, and has become one of my favorites. For sake of dragging on this post, let me just highlight. As the Moon waxes and gets bigger and bigger, it is learning and taking in as much as it can. It keeps expanding and expanding and expanding. Until it's gotten to its full point. After that, as the Moon begins to wane, it gives and gives and gives, until it has nothing left to give anymore. All selflessly, for the purpose of simply serving. I love this story and analogy to our own selves. It is from the Moon that we learn to be our best self, only to give everything that we have for something greater than ourself, all while doing completely selflessly. What better way to honor this energy which truly is INCREDIBLY giving to us by some Moon Salutations. You will see a lot of the poses in this cycle require bowing down, putting our heads on the ground, etc. To me, this is surrendering ourself to what is, to the universe, to something greater than ourself. Take time to practice Moon Salutations. Offer our namaskars to the forces that allow us to be the best versions of ourselves. Download link here for your Moon Salutation Practice!!!
